PRESS RELEASE: Akuapem North Rejects Uninspiring and Disappointing NPP Bawumia and Sammi
5/08/2024
The Akuapem North Constituency stands united in rejecting the uninspiring and disappointing candidates of the ruling NPP government. The recent visit of the non-performing Vice President and NPP flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, alongside the opportunistic NPP Parliamentary Candidate, Sammi Awuku, to the Presbyterian College of Education in Akropong on August 2, 2024, has further highlighted the government's blatant disregard for the youth and their pressing concerns.
In their knee-jerk visit, Dr. Bawumia and Sammi Awuku demonstrated an alarming irresponsibility and lack of empathy. Rather than addressing the critical issues affecting the youth, they indulged in their usual campaign fanfares. The non performing Vice President, who heads the Economic Management Team, in addressing the few students who were forced to show up, failed to address the ongoing CETAG strike that endangers the future of our teacher trainees. Furthermore, he conveniently ignored the issue of the over two years of unpaid teacher training allowances, poor feeding, and the unbearable cost of education facing students.
It is not surprising to see the super incompetent Dr. Bawumia, once touted as an economic "Wizkid," now avoiding discussions on economic management, choosing instead to hide behind digitalization rhetoric. This government has driven our economy into a ditch, and the Vice President’s refusal to engage with students on these matters speaks volumes about his failed leadership. The students were denied a genuine platform to voice their grievances, a clear escape from accountability, with only three pre-set questions being allowed, ignoring the many students who wanted to discuss their unpaid meager allowances, the ongoing 10-week CETAG strike, and the poor living conditions on campus exacerbated by economic hardships.
The Vice President’s visit was a mockery of the youth's intelligence and concerns. Despite protests from student leaders to subject the vice president to accountability, they were denied the opportunity to ask real questions. Instead of providing solutions, the Vice President and his parliamentary candidate wasted students' time with uninspiring jokes and campaign gimmicks. This blatant disregard for student concerns is unacceptable and indicative of the NPP’s failed governance.
We, in the NDC, are not surprised by the NPP government's lack of answers to the challenges faced by the youth and students in our tertiary institutions. The time has come for change. We call on all disappointed students, regardless of party affiliation, to join us in demanding responsible leadership. Akuapem North deserves leaders who will address the real issues and provide tangible solutions.
Under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama as President and John Evans as Member of Parliament, we will implement a 24-hour economy that puts our country back on the path of progress and economic development. We pledge to address the pressing issues affecting the youth, including resolving the CETAG strike, the many problems facing tertiary students, and improving living conditions on campuses.
The youth of Akuapem North and all teacher training students in the country deserve better. It is time to reject the uninspiring and disappointing NPPs Bawumia and Sammi and embrace a future with responsible, accountable, aand empathetic leadership in John Dramani Mahama as President and John Evans as Member of Parliament.
