In the political history of the Eastern Region, few figures have left as enduring a mark as Bismark Tawiah Boateng, affectionately known as “Otafre Gya.” His tenure as Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is remembered not only for his dynamism but also for the transformative effect he had on the visibility and competitiveness of the party in a region long considered a stronghold of the opposition.

Tawiah Boateng earned the reputation of being an energetic leader through the consistency of his engagement with the grassroots and the passion he invested in party organization. His chairmanship was characterized by relentless activism, an ability to mobilize diverse constituencies, and an unwavering commitment to strengthening the NDC’s internal structures. These qualities elevated his standing among party members and created a renewed sense of purpose and confidence within the rank and file.

One of his most significant achievements was the consolidation of the NDC’s base in the Eastern Region. Through his efforts, the party achieved greater respect and recognition, projecting itself as a serious political contender against the New Patriotic Party (NPP). His leadership style, which combined energy with strategic vision, challenged long-held perceptions about the NDC’s capacity to compete effectively in the region. This not only enhanced the party’s visibility but also expanded its influence in electoral outcomes and political discourse.

Beyond partisan gains, Tawiah Boateng’s approach to leadership was grounded in humility, inclusiveness, and reconciliation. He demonstrated a rare ability to unify diverse interests within the party, ensuring that differences were managed in ways that strengthened cohesion rather than division. This human dimension of his leadership, coupled with his political acumen, left a legacy that continues to inspire loyalty and admiration among party faithful and sympathizers alike.

For many, Otafre Gya remains more than a political figure; he is remembered as a symbol of passion, resilience, and unwavering dedication to the cause of the NDC in the Eastern Region. His impact transcends his tenure, standing as a reference point for effective regional leadership within Ghana’s broader democratic practice. Indeed, he exemplifies the conviction that true leadership is measured by both institutional strengthening and the ability to inspire those one leads.

Bismark Tawiah Boateng will forever be remembered as the energetic chairman whose contribution to the NDC’s journey in the Eastern Region remains invaluable  and for all who witnessed his service and sacrifice, loving him is a must.
